What the Pope Should Do
I couldn't help noticing that a local Jewish delegation is to meet the Pope during his visit to Sydney. From the comments of participants, as reported in the AJN, it seems that the delegation is celebrating the rapprochement between the Catholic Church and World Jewry.

THE Giant of Australian Jewry
4 Tammuz 5768 saw the passing of Rabbi Yitzchok Dovid Groner OBM. Isi Leibler once exclaimed - "without Rabbi Groner there would be no Australian Jewry"

Master or Monster?

That's the screaming headline at the front of this week's Wentworth Courier, referring of course to internationally famous Australian photographer, Bill Henson.

The Anzac Israel Connection
On the Last Day of Pesach I spoke of the deep connection that exists between our "lucky country" of residence, Australia, and our country of origin and ultimate destiny, Israel.   (pic: Anzacs at Be'er Sheva 08)

Time for Some Good News
With all the shocking reports of corruption and the abuse of power reported in the media recently, I thought it worthwhile to share with you a recent New York Times article about an Orthodox Jewish Principal who totally transformed a school in New York City.

The True Meaning of Sorry
In English, there is only one word - "sorry" - and it's used in a variety of contexts. Hebrew, however, this one English expression translates into two very different Hebrew words: "slicha" which means "Forgive (me)" and "Ani Mitzta'er" which means "I am pained". The events of this week made me aware of the huge difference between the two alternate meanings of this one word.

A Letter of Consolation

A while ago a congregant asked me if I could help him with an unusual request. A very close non-Jewish friend had suffered the tragedy of losing his beloved wife shortly after the birth of their second child. Although several months had passed he was inconsolable. He had been comforted by very senior members of his church, but to no avail. Our congregant asked if I could perhaps share with his friend some Jewish wisdom...more

Jewish Learning Graduates at South Head

South Head Synagogue completed its first year of Jewish Learning Institute Courses with a hugely successful Graduation dinner in the Herbert Hall on Monday night July 7th.
Over 90 people who had completed the Courses "Beyond Belief" and "Talmudic Ethics" enjoyed a fabulous BBQ and participated in spirited debates on issues touching on some of the things participants had learned during the Courses.

First was the question, "Should we or should we not tick the organ donation box on our Drivers' Licences?".  Second was the highly sensitive issue of "Whether abortion should or should not be allowed in the case of a pregnant 11 year old rape victim".

The debate was then rounded off with the light hearted question, "Is it ok to tell my wife I am going to a shiur when really I am going to the football?"

Reaction to the Courses has been overwhelmingly positive and is best summed up by the comments of participant Joe Fischer, (pictured right with Alex Freitag)  "Each one has been excellent: stimulating, thought provoking, educational and enjoyable and Talmudic Ethics continued the pattern being highly relevant to everyday life and offering an all important Jewish perspective to help guide thought and action. The way you conduct the classes and impart knowledge is terrific and really positively impacts the learning experience. Taking the JLI classes with you enriches the week and I am very much looking forward to the start of the next series. "

Special Prayers

In view of the unstable state of the entire world at this time, I urge everyone to recite the following prayers, which according to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of blessed memory, have the ability to steady a shaky world

At the beginning of the day, the following should be recited:

Behold I accept upon myself the positive commandment, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself."

One should say these next verses after one's prayers every day. Or if, for some reason one doesn't pray, then at least these verses should be recited:

Do not fear sudden terror, nor the destruction of the wicked when it comes. Contrive a scheme, but it will be foiled; conspire a plot, but it will not materialize, for G-d is with us. To your old age I am [with you]; to your hoary years I will sustain you; I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you and deliver you. Indeed, the righteous will extol Your Name; the upright will dwell securely in Your presence.
