The Need to Celebrate Together

Shabbat Mevorchim Re'eh 27 Av / August 10/11

In just a few short weeks we will be celebrating the High Holy Days.

We are confident that you, our generous and warm-hearted community, will again assist the less fortunate in our community to celebrate Yom Tov in a befitting manner.

Here are some examples of what we have been able to achieve in the past year through your support of the Simchat Yom Tov v'Shabbat Fund:Ê

A young bride who lost a parent just weeks before the wedding was able to properly experience and enjoy her wedding because of the financial assistance we gave her.
We were able to provide furnishings for a family who were reduced to sitting on the floor.
On Pesach we provided dishes and kitchen utensils to a family who would not otherwise have been able to prepare Yom Tov meals.
A family was able to make a Bar Mitzvah for their son who otherwise would have had no simcha to mark this significant event in his life.
We prevented marital breakdown through securing professional counselling for families in distress, one of the greatest mitzvahs as it literally affects generations.

The above is in addition to the assistance that we provide for dozens of families in need with groceries, fruit, vegetables, meat and poultry over the Yom Tov period.

If you are invited out over Yom Tov, you may wish to consider donating to our fund in lieu of a gift to your hosts. We have just prepared a beautiful new card that we will send your hosts informing them of your donation on their behalf.

In the merit of the mitzvah of showing care and concern for those in need may you and those close to you never be in need of human help. And together with our people Israel everywhere, may you be signed and sealed for a Good and Sweet year.

Special Prayers

In view of the unstable state of the entire world at this time, I urge everyone to recite the following prayers, which according to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of blessed memory, have the ability to steady a shaky world

At the beginning of the day, the following should be recited:

Behold I accept upon myself the positive commandment, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself."

One should say these next verses after one's prayers every day. Or if, for some reason one doesn't pray, then at least these verses should be recited:

Do not fear sudden terror, nor the destruction of the wicked when it comes. Contrive a scheme, but it will be foiled; conspire a plot, but it will not materialize, for G-d is with us. To your old age I am [with you]; to your hoary years I will sustain you; I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you and deliver you. Indeed, the righteous will extol Your Name; the upright will dwell securely in Your presence.
