JLI Graduates

Dear <~~First~~>,
We have just concluded our third and final JLI course for the Jewish year 5768 and what a fantastic year it was. The overwhelming response - each course attracted more participants that the the previous one - demonstrated loud and clear the deep-seated interest that exists within our community for in-depth Jewish knowledge.
Although much of the material that I present at the course is unique - and I spend many, many hours each week tailor-making slides, videos and handouts to suit - the overall publicity, framework and resources provided by the international Jewish Learning Institute are fantastic. Kol HaKavod to them for putting together the broadest Adult Education programme in the world with close to 300 affiliate organizations teaching their courses globally.
It is especially gratifying to me that once again, after leading the way with a most successful programme, other shules in our immediate vicinity will be following suit. Just this morning I heard that Dover Heights has applied to JLI for registration and I sincerely hope that they are as successful as we are. As Rabbi Saada Gaon wrote over a thousand years ago - "our people are only a people because of Torah". The more Torah knowledge, the deeper our commitment to the Jewish people and all that we stand for.
This last course, Talmudic Ethics-Tough Decisions - attracted 75 participants over Monday evenings and Wednesday mornings. Below you will find our fresh offerings for next year. However due to the popularity of this course, I will be offering it again after Yom Tov at SHAW Stockbroking on Tuesdays.
This Monday evening we will be celebrating the conclusion of the course with a Graduation BBQ in which we will hold a debate on the following topics:
1. Should we or should we not tick the organ donation box on our Drivers' Licence? 2. Should or should not abortion be allowed in the case of a pregnant 11 year old rape victim in Romania? 3. Is it ok to tell my wife that I am going to the rugby when in fact I am going to a shiur?
I will conclude with an email I received this week from a member who participated in all three courses.
"Following on from Lenny's very appropriate words on Monday evening, I wanted to personally add my thanks for yet another really fantastic JLI program.
"Each one has been excellent: stimulating, thought provoking, educational and enjoyable and Talmudic Ethics continued the pattern being highly relevant to everyday life and offering an all important Jewish perspective to help guide thought and action.
"The way you conduct the classes and impart knowledge is terrific and really positively impacts the learning experience.
"Taking the JLI classes with you enriches the week and I am very much looking forward to the start of the next series.
"A big Yasher Koach for this fantastic initiative and for all your hard work to make it deservedly successful." Joe Fischer.
On behalf of Rebbetzen Henya and all of us at South Head best wishes for a Good Shabbos.

Two Beggars in Rome - one Catholic - one Jew - are sitting side by side on a street in Rome. One has a cross in front of him; the other one the Star of David.
Many people go by and look at both beggars, but only put money into the hat of the beggar sitting behind the cross.
A priest comes by, stops and watches throngs of people giving money to the beggar behind the cross, but none give to the beggar behind the Star of David.
Finally, the priest goes over to the beggar behind the Star of David and says, "My poor fellow, don't you understand? This is a Catholic country; this city is the seat of Catholicism. People aren't going to give money if you sit there with a Star of David in front of you, especially when you're sitting beside a beggar who has a cross. In fact, they would probably give to him just out of spite."
The beggar behind the Star of David listened to the priest, turned to the other beggar with the cross and says: "Moishe, look who's trying to teach the Goldstein brothers about marketing?
