It's a Girl

Dear <~~First~~>,
The Rebbetzen and I are thrilled to announce the birth of a baby granddaughter - to our children Levi and Nechama Dina - in New York.
Chaya Mushka - name after the Rebbe' wife - was born on Shabbos, which was Tu B'Shevat (New Year for Trees). Baruch Hashem, both baby and mother are well, and father and grandparents are ecstatic!
In honour of our new granddaughter, I will give a brief outline of my drasha last Shabbat, when I explained the Torah's comparison of human beings to trees.
1) We must have roots firmly embedded in the traditions of our ancestors; 2) We must continue to grow spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically from year to year (just as the tree sprouts new branches and grows rings annually); 3) We must not only be concerned for ourselves but bear fruit; 4) Most importantly, we must be cognisant that as trees we are part of an eco-system - so that our conduct and influence affects everything around us.
This last lesson is especially pertinent to this week's parasha where, prior to the giving of the Ten Commandments on Mt Sinai, Jethro, who had previously served every idol in the world, came to acknowledge the One G-d of Israel. Commenting on this our Rabbis explain that Jethro's acknowledgement of G-d was a necessary prerequisite of the Jewish People receiving the Torah.
Nowadays too, our own spiritual development is contingent on the world coming closer to G-d. It is for this reason that the Jewish People are called a Nation of Priests - with a responsibility for all mankind.
In this regard, I was especially gratified to learn, as I mentioned in shule a number of weeks ago, that there are Catholics here in Australia who study the parasha of the week. In doing so, they derive such practical lessons as nurturing positive family relationships, respecting those with different beliefs and caring for strangers. This group has no interest in converting Jews - rather they wish to honour and acknowledge the Torah - their parent religion - and in so doing nurture Christian respect of Jews. They are currently operating in over 15 parishes around Sydney.
In the spirit of Jethro, we wish them well in their endeavours, and will encourage them in any way possible.
With best wishes for a Good Shabbos,
On behalf of the Rebbetzen and all of us at South Head
Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM

"Well, that's interesting. Show me, " says G-d
So the scientist bends down to the earth and starts to mould the soil.
"Oh no, no, no," interrupts G-d, "get your own dirt!"
