Rabbi's Message

A Mother's Influence

Dear <~~First~~>,

When listing genealogy, the Torah generally only speaks of a child as the son of his father - ignoring the mother.

Yet in Parashat VaYera, the Torah on three occasions lists the mother as the progenitor of the child.
a) And Amran took Yocheved... and she gave birth to Aharon and Moses.
b) And Aharon took Elisheva... and she gave birth to Elazar.
c) And Elazar took from the daughters of Putiel as a wife... and she gave birth to Pinchas.

Highly unusual!

Although it is the father's name that is normally mentioned, this is for identification purposes (similar to a surname), for the purposes of inheritance, etc.

However, when it comes to innate qualities, especially those associated with leadership - the mother's influence is paramount.

Each of the above men - Moses, Aharon, Elazar and Pinchas - were leaders of the Jewish People. By mentioning their mothers in association with their birth, the Torah wishes to point out that it was they who played a pivotal role in the development of their leadership ability.

This is emphasised by Rashi in his comment a few verses later where he says: "It was Moses and Aharon who Yocheved bore to Amran that stood before Pharaoh."

Friday the Rabbi Laughed!

Archaeological Wager

An archaeologist was digging in the Negev Desert in Israel and came upon a casket containing a mummy, a rather rare occurrence in Israel, to say the least. After examining it, he called the curator of the Israel museum in Jerusalem.

I've just discovered a 3,000 year old mummy of a man who died of heart failure!" the excited scientist exclaimed.

To which the curator replied, "Bring him in. We'll check it out."

A week later, the amazed curator called the archaeologist. "You were right about both the mummy's age and cause of death. How in the world did you know?"

"Easy,” said the archaeologist. “There was a piece of paper in his hand that said, '10,000 Shekels on Goliath.’”
