Iran: Threat & Challenge
|
|
Dear <~~First~~>,
Speakers' Forum We are very pleased to be hosting our third Speakers' Forum this coming Wednesday evening in conjunction with AIJAC. With the current political climate in the world, it has never been more important to be very well informed about Middle East issues. Guest Speaker Dr Michael Rubin, Ph.D is a master on this subject, having done his major research on Iran, Iraq and Kurdish society . He is the resident scholar in foreign and defense policy studies at American Enterprise Institute and instructs senior US Army & Marine officers deploying to Iraq and Kuwait.
Dr Rubin will present: Iran: Threat & Challenge I strongly urge you to attend - 8pm Wedneday in the Herbert Hall In my absence, Mr Harold Milner will host the evening.
-------
The Hard Way Around Tomorrow evening during Seudat Shlichit our very own Alan Wahlhaus will relate some of the amazing adventures he and his sons had on their 40 days in the Australian desert -"The Hard Way Around". Their journey was aimed at raising funds for cancer research and their stories are bound to uplift and inspire.

Simchas Yom Tov As we approach the High Holy Day season, praying to G-d for a bountiful year, it behoves us to think of others less fortunate than ourselves; people for whom the purchase of sufficient meat, fish, wine, clothes and shoes for the children is an unaffordable luxury even at Yom Tov time. In these difficult economic times things are tight for those of means; one can imagine the difficulties of those less fortunate. There are many people without work or with less than adequate work.
As I reflect on the generous response I received to my appeal before Pesach and Rosh HaShanah last year I am confident that you will again help us realise this most important mitzvah of assisting fellow Jews. To see the joy and relief on the faces of the recipients, together with their deep appreciation, makes one understand what a truly great Mitzvah it is.
Of course all this was only possible through your generosity to my appeals which surpassed all expectations.
During the festive season it is customary to give gifts to friends and family. In the past, rather than giving gifts, a number of people made donations to our Simchas Yom Tov fund in the name of a friend or relative. We send them a beautiful card saying that a donation to a family in need has been made in their honour.
I pray that Hashem rewards all those who contribute to this important cause, measure for measure, by giving you parnassah and wealth, and ensuring that neither you nor any of your loved ones are ever in need.

40/60s Shabbat Dinner - Smashing Success Finally, I would like to say how delighted we were with the success of last Friday night's Singles Dinner with over a hundred people attending. There has been a pressing need for functions of this kind for people in the 40/60 age group and we were very proud indeed to have given the Shul's support to Debbie Katz who spearheaded the effort of bringing this evening together. I also thank Karen Fried whose effort was a large part of the success of the event.
Despite the driving rain and cold, South Head's Herbert Hall provided an atmosphere of warmth, relaxation and congeniality and the cuisine was outstanding with Mrs Grunfeld outdoing herself to make the occasion really special.
As one attendee commented, "The food was delicious, the drink plentiful and the atmosphere warm and friendly. I sincerely hope that you were also pleased with the outcome given your dedication and commitment. A big thank you also to the synagogue for hosting the event and to the rabbi for his attendance and wise words. I hope that they will continue to support such events, and others which are beneficial to the community."
Plans are already under way for the next function and with appropriate support from the community South Head hopes to expand to other age groups as well.
On behalf of Rebbetzen Henya and all of us at South Head best wishes for a Good Shabbos.

WOMEN MAKING A DIFFERENCE
A group of orthodox women has created a prayer initiative for the 10 Days of Penitence (Aseret Yemai Teshuva) between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
One way to change the world is to say 100 brachot (blessings) a day. Saying "amen" to another person's bracha is equivalent to saying the bracha oneself.
The group will meet for six days for an abbreviated Shacharit at 8.30am at the home of Liane Robinson. The focus will be for every woman present to say 100 brachot or "amen"s. This will be followed by breakfast and a Dvar Torah as well as the taking of tzeddakah for local and Israeli charities.
Jewish women are said to have saved our people at the time of the Golden Calf. This is an opportunity for only six days for Jewish women in Sydney to try and do the same again.
