Rabbi's Message

Two Beginnings

Dear <~~First~~>,

Jews are often blamed for taking "control" of the world.

While we don't subscribe to this clearly anti-Semitic notion, our tradition does make it clear that we have a special role to play in the moral and spiritual elevation of the world.

With the Divine insight of the Torah, we Jews have been assigned the responsibility to uplift a world which would otherwise be beholden to the "animal" within man.

This is what is meant by the first word in the Torah, Bereishit. Although literally meaning, "In the beginning G-d created the heaven and the earth", our sages have interpretted it as meaning: "Beit Reishit" - Two Beginnings. As Rashi explains, "Because of two beginnings G-d created the heaven and the earth".

What are the "two beginnings"?

Concerning Torah it is written "G-d established me at the beginning of His way" (Proverbs 8:22) while the Jewish people are called "the first produce" (Jeremiah 3:2).

Shabbat Bereishit is certainly a time to recommit ourselves to doing whatever we can to uplift the moral and spiritual fibre of the world in which we live, hence preparing it for the ultimate Redemption.

With best wishes for a Good Shabbos.

On behalf of the Rebbetzen and all of us at South Head

Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM

Good Shabbos from Rabbi Yossi and Rivky Shuchat

Friday the Rabbi Laughed!

Bubbie Knows Best

It was Benny's third birthday party and he was having a lovely time. Soon it was time to open his presents. His favorite was from his Bubbie Rivka – a water gun. He jumped up and down with delight and then ran to the nearest sink to fill it up.

But his mother was not so pleased. She turned to Rivka and said, "I'm surprised at you, Mom. Don't you remember how we used to drive you crazy with water guns when we were young?"

Bubbie Rivka smiled and replied, "I remember. Oiy do I remember!"
