Not an "All Ordinary" Succot
|
|
Dear <~~First~~>,
The current volatility in the financial world and the Festival of Succot have much in common.
The flimsy Succah is meant to illustrate the tenuous hold that we have, not only on life, but on the people and possessions that we hold so dear.
Sitting in the Succah is meant to bring home the message that our lives, dear ones and prized possessions are no more than gifts that we should prize to the fullest while we have them - for there is no guarantee as to how long that will be.
This sense of appreciation for what we have - the opposite of an attitude of entitlement - is the best possible vehicle for receiving Hashem's blessing in the future.
It also leads to a sense of contentment, happiness and joy.
Henya and I look forward to seeing you in our home on Simchas Torah - Tuesday night - the joyful highlight of the High Holy Day period.
Please join us as we gird ourselves with the joy, strength and vitality to face the challenges of the coming year.
With best wishes for a Good Shabbos, and Chag Sameach,
On behalf of the Rebbetzen and all of us at South Head
Rabbi Benzion Milecki OAM

JEWISH LIFE IN AUSTRALIA - A NATIONAL SURVEY
The Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation at Monash University is conducting the first ever comprehensive national survey of the Jewish population in Australia, with support by the Jewish Communal Appeal Planning Committee in Sydney.

Eye of the Beholder
Three sons left home, went out on their own and prospered. Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly mother.
The first said, "I built a big house for our mother."
The second said," I sent her a Mercedes with a driver."
The third smiled and said, "I've got you both beat. You know how Mom enjoys the Bible, and you know she can't see very well. I sent her a brown parrot that can recite the entire Bible. It took 12 years to teach him. I had to spend $100,000 a year for 10 years, but it was worth it. Mom just has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot will recite it."
Soon thereafter, Mom sent out her letters of thanks:
"Milton," she wrote, my first son, "The house you built is so huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house."
"Marvin," she wrote to another, "I am too old to travel. I stay home all the time, so I never use the Mercedes. And the driver is so boring!"
"Dearest Melvin," she wrote to her third son, "You were the only son to have the good sense to know what your mother likes. That chicken was delicious."
