News and Commentary

Get Old but Stay Young!
This week we read about Abraham "getting old and coming in days". Our Rabbis explain that "ageing" began with Abraham. Abraham and Isaac were identical in appearance and people confused the two. "Someone who wanted to speak to Abraham spoke to Isaac; someone who wanted to speak to Isaac spoke to Abraham." So Abraham asked G-d to make him look older. (This was at a time when being older commanded respect...) But was Abraham truly old? Listen to this week's podcast where I explain that we can "get old" but still remain fully engaged in the days of our lives. Click here

The Highs and Lows of Life
At times we feel on top of the world, at others, at its depth. The story of Hashem's appearance to Abraham gives us direction no matter what station we are at in the journey of life. To hear how, please click here for a five minute insight

Hosting Guests
Abraham was the first Jew to whom G-d appeared. But did you know that he once stood up Hashem and kept Him cooling His heels? If you have a little more time and would like to hear a shiur on the great mitzvah of Hachnasat Orchim - hosting guests - click here.

Is Being Good Relative? An audio shiur ..
We have all heard of moral relativism.  Is being good an absolute, or is it possible to be relatively good? Click here to hear the answer. It's only six minutes long!

Two Beginnings
Concerning Torah it is written "G-d established me at the beginning of His way" (Proverbs 8:22) while the Jewish people are called "the first produce" (Jeremiah 3:2)

What the Pope Should Do
I couldn't help noticing that a local Jewish delegation is to meet the Pope during his visit to Sydney. From the comments of participants, as reported in the AJN, it seems that the delegation is celebrating the rapprochement between the Catholic Church and World Jewry.

The True Meaning of Sorry
In English, there is only one word - "sorry" - and it's used in a variety of contexts. Hebrew, however, this one English expression translates into two very different Hebrew words: "slicha" which means "Forgive (me)" and "Ani Mitzta'er" which means "I am pained". The events of this week made me aware of the huge difference between the two alternate meanings of this one word.

BatMitzvah Discovery Course - Summer Semester

Just before YomTov the girls experienced the mitzvah of Bikkur Cholim when they accompanied Rebbetzin Milecki on a Hospital Visit.

At the start of November the group made their own challah boards which has always been one of the most popular pracs with Rebbetzin Milecki.

Special Prayers

In view of the unstable state of the entire world at this time, I urge everyone to recite the following prayers, which according to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of blessed memory, have the ability to steady a shaky world

At the beginning of the day, the following should be recited:

Behold I accept upon myself the positive commandment, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself."

One should say these next verses after one's prayers every day. Or if, for some reason one doesn't pray, then at least these verses should be recited:

Do not fear sudden terror, nor the destruction of the wicked when it comes. Contrive a scheme, but it will be foiled; conspire a plot, but it will not materialize, for G-d is with us. To your old age I am [with you]; to your hoary years I will sustain you; I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you and deliver you. Indeed, the righteous will extol Your Name; the upright will dwell securely in Your presence.
