Our Jewish Learning Institute course, The Land and the Spirit, got off to a fantastic start in its first week with 64 people attending over the two sessions. Participants left with a far deeper understanding of the centrality of Israel to the Jewish mission. This will be expanded on further in the next five weeks.
The high tech course utilized specially published text books, and included an audio-visual Power Point presentation with some really great video. (A big thank you to Mark Singer of Mark Singer Multimedia and to my PA Helen Meyer for their hard work in ensuring that the hardware worked and everything was prepared). It was especially gratifying to see the participants fully engaged in the learning process as evidenced by the ensuing discussion. See below for some feedback.
Unfortunately we were unable to accommodate all the demand, with fourteen people remaining on the waiting list. If at all possible, we hope to offer the course again in the new year. If you missed out this time and would like to attend, please contact Helen.
As I have said previously, the "Land and the Spirit" is but the first in an ongoing series of courses aimed at the intelligent adult wishing to gain a deep understanding of Judaism.
I would therefore like to remind you that our next course is due to commence in the second week of February. It will be entitled: "Beyond Belief: Reflections on Jewish Faith, Reason, and Experience".
The course will focus on the thirteen principles of Maimonides that are at the core of Jewish faith and define our consciousness. These principles are a brilliant distillation of a belief system that is at once logically ordered and emotionally compelling. Taken together, they form the basis for a deeply satisfying relationship with G-d, with the world in which we live, and with our true selves.
If you are interested in attending this course, please be sure to register your interest with Helen now.
Here is some feedback from course participants:
“Rabbi BenZion Milecki has lived up to his first name “Son of ZION” by imbuing his enthusiastic audience with the fruits of his labours” - Julien Ginsberg
"A very well constructed course; interesting and enlightening." - Lionel Goldsmith
"I thought the first lesson of the program was great. Very interesting and informative. I especially liked the learning process: one of discovery and unfolding of information in a well thought out sequence. The mix of audio-visual and 'live' interaction is very good & you facilitate it well.On the basis of the first lesson, a great program and yasher koach to you for making it happen. I am really looking forward to the series." - Joe Fischer

In view of the unstable state of the entire world at this time, I urge everyone to recite the following prayers, which according to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of blessed memory, have the ability to steady a shaky world
At the beginning of the day, the following should be recited:
Behold I accept upon myself the positive commandment, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself."
One should say these next verses after one's prayers every day. Or if, for some reason one doesn't pray, then at least these verses should be recited:
Do not fear sudden terror, nor the destruction of the wicked when it comes. Contrive a scheme, but it will be foiled; conspire a plot, but it will not materialize, for G-d is with us. To your old age I am [with you]; to your hoary years I will sustain you; I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you and deliver you. Indeed, the righteous will extol Your Name; the upright will dwell securely in Your presence.
