Shabbat Vayeira - 15 Cheshvan 5768
Abraham was 99 year's old when he was circumcised! Lesson: You are never to old to be a child!
A child is full of boundless energy, always seeking to discover something new and never content to just sit around. This year, the Year of the South Head Child, as announced on Rosh HaShana, is not just for biological kids. It is for all of us who are really kids at heart. A year full of new activity.
This has been a truly wonderful week. I have hosted Rabbi Gershon Grossbaum, an internationally acknowledged consultant in the building of Mikvaot. Apart from being a leader in his field, he is a real mensch, his modesty on a par with his expertise. Under the direction of the tireless head of the Building Committee, Richard Seidman, Rabbi Grossbaum has worked eighteen hour days, and has gained the respect of architects, engineers and town planners. In addition, he has led a number of discussion groups and shiurim with members of the community. As a result, the South Head Mikveh is becoming ever more manifest in the consciousness of our community.
Rabbi Grossbaum will deliver a short message to the community this evening in shule, the sermon tomorrow morning, and a shiur tomorrow afternoon. We urge members of the community to attend and familiarize themselves with what is taking place. We really want you to be in the loop. You will have ample opportunity to ask any questions you may have, especially during the shiur tomorrow afternoon which will take place at 5.15pm.
In addition, one of the two major sponsors, Mr Kevin Bermeister, will deliver a short talk this evening in which he will explain what motivated him to donate so substantially to a Mikveh - a facility which some may consider a relic from our ancient past. In this vein, I will be leading a discussion at the home of Lonn and Mandy Miller, 1 Davies Avenue, Vaucluse this Tuesday, October 30 at 7.45am. The shiur, "Mikveh: What on Earth for?!?!" is directed to the Young Adults in our community. Please email Lonn for details .
I have also been enormously gratified by the response to our new JLI Adult Education Course, the Land and the Spirit. Monday night is now full, but there are still some places available for Wednesday morning. Please call Helen to book on 9371 7300 Ext 4 or email.
I am also really looking forward to seeing lots and lots of kids in shule next week, Nov-3rd, for our third "Bless the Kiddies Shabbos". I get so much joy out of seeing your kids coming up to the Bimah so I can bless them under my Talis! I'm sure they love it too and no doubt getting a very special treat for being there goes down pretty well too!

In view of the unstable state of the entire world at this time, I urge everyone to recite the following prayers, which according to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of blessed memory, have the ability to steady a shaky world
At the beginning of the day, the following should be recited:
Behold I accept upon myself the positive commandment, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself."
One should say these next verses after one's prayers every day. Or if, for some reason one doesn't pray, then at least these verses should be recited:
Do not fear sudden terror, nor the destruction of the wicked when it comes. Contrive a scheme, but it will be foiled; conspire a plot, but it will not materialize, for G-d is with us. To your old age I am [with you]; to your hoary years I will sustain you; I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you and deliver you. Indeed, the righteous will extol Your Name; the upright will dwell securely in Your presence.
