A Chanukah Present for You!

Rabbi Benzion Milecki - Shabbat Mikeitz 8 Chanukah

Do we have a Chanukah present for you!

Chanukah, as it's name implies, is a time of dedication and education. So what better time than now to dedicate a really terrific educational and enjoyable website. Our new site really is the website to beat all websites - and the Rebbetzen and I are dedicating it in honour of the Pidyon HaBen (Redemption of the First Born) of our first grandson, Menachem Mendel which we celebrated this week with our family in Melbourne.

As you know, to keep web sites relevant and useful, it is important to update content on a regular basis.

I have done my best to write informative and/or inspiring articles on a regular basis - and these are sent to you via the weekly newsletter and then posted to our home page - www.southhead.org.

At the same time, my secretary Helen Meyer Franklin has posted news of our latest simchas, activities, service times, etc. on our website on a weekly basis.

All in all, this has meant that our web site is one of the most current and informative in Sydney.

But the Jewish World is Baruch Hashem, huge - and there is no reason to limit our content to no more than what we create ourselves! Ever looking for opportunities for expansion and improvement, I have for a very long time been thinking of ways to increase the resources and content on our site.

To this end, over the past months I have been in discussion with Rabbi Meir Simcha Kogan, who some of you may remember as the person, who together with Rabbi Moshe Kahn, launched South Head Youth some ten years ago. He did a fantastic job then, and does even greater work today. For many years now, Meir Simcha has been the Director of Chabad.Org, arguably the biggest Jewish content supplier in the world.

What is important for us though, is that Meir Simcha has assisted me in getting absolutely brilliant content and resources onto our very own site, www.SouthHead.org. You don’t need to go anywhere else!

Over the next few weeks, we will be updating the menu on our home page to provide easy access to all our new features. In addition, each week I will highlight in my weekly email newsletter a feature of our updated site that I think you will benefit from and enjoy.

For today, I will highlight several of the most useful features of our new site.

Calendar:
Please go here for one of the best Jewish calendars on the web. Apart from being full of Jewish content which can be viewed in day/month/week/year mode, we will also be posting data on the calendar that is relevant to our shule. You will have a totally up to date online calendar which will contain South Head service times, events, adult and youth activities, etc. (Please bare with us until early next week while we get all this great info into the calendar). Better still, if you wish you can use this calendar as your personal diary in which you post your own appointments, functions, etc. Fantastic!

Chanukah:
Each week, there is a terrific magazine section, with great stuff on the parasha for both adults and kids. But for now, why not visit our magazine to access some really cool Chanukah stuff. Just go here.

Kids:
For fantastic Chanukah games, activities, stories, cartoons, etc. for your children, go here. But be warned: they won’t give you back the computer for hours!

Torah Learning:
If you would like to study the weekly parasha we have a number of options for you:

For a brief synopsis of the parasha go here.
For the parasha with Rashi’s commentary in English, go here.
And if you would like to review the parasha with the benefit of inspirational commentaries, than you need go no further than here.

So please enjoy!

With best wishes for a Good Shabbos, and a very Happy Chanukah!

Special Prayers

In view of the unstable state of the entire world at this time, I urge everyone to recite the following prayers, which according to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of blessed memory, have the ability to steady a shaky world

At the beginning of the day, the following should be recited:

Behold I accept upon myself the positive commandment, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself."

One should say these next verses after one's prayers every day. Or if, for some reason one doesn't pray, then at least these verses should be recited:

Do not fear sudden terror, nor the destruction of the wicked when it comes. Contrive a scheme, but it will be foiled; conspire a plot, but it will not materialize, for G-d is with us. To your old age I am [with you]; to your hoary years I will sustain you; I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you and deliver you. Indeed, the righteous will extol Your Name; the upright will dwell securely in Your presence.
